Hybrid Cloud vs On-Premise IT: How to Choose
By the CTEKS team · October 15, 2026 · 2 min read
- Choose by software needs, compliance, cost and downtime tolerance.
- Hybrid is common and often sensible.
- Move in phases and review at hardware end of life.
Should your servers live in your office, in the cloud, or both? There is no single right answer, but there is a right answer for your business.
On-premise
Servers in your own building. You control the equipment and data location, and some software works best this way. The trade-off is hardware cost, upkeep, power, cooling and responsibility for backup and recovery.
Public cloud
Services in Microsoft Azure, AWS or similar. You pay as you go, scale quickly and avoid owning hardware. The trade-off is ongoing cost, the need to manage settings and security well, and dependence on internet connectivity.
Hybrid
A mix: for example Microsoft 365 and cloud backup, plus a local server for a specialized application. Many small and mid-sized businesses end up here for good reasons.
How to decide
- What does your software require?
- How important are speed and local access?
- What are your compliance and data location rules?
- What are the total costs over three to five years, including staff time?
- How much downtime can you tolerate?
A common path
Move email and files to the cloud first, back up everything off-site, then review servers as they reach end of life instead of replacing them automatically.
How CTEKS helps
We help you compare options with a clear total cost view, then plan and carry out the move or the refresh.
Frequently asked questions
Is cloud always cheaper?
No. It can save hardware and upkeep costs, but ongoing fees add up. Compare total cost over several years.
Can we keep one server on site?
Yes. Many businesses keep a local server for specific software and use the cloud for everything else.
What about internet outages?
Plan for them with redundant connections and local access for critical functions where needed.
