What Should a Managed IT Plan Include?
By the CTEKS team · October 15, 2026 · 2 min read
Managed IT plans can look similar on the surface and be very different in practice. Here is a simple way to compare them.
1. Support that fits how your team works
Ask how users reach the help desk, how fast you can expect a response, and whether remote and onsite help are both included. A plan that bills every call can discourage people from asking for help until a small problem is a big one.
2. Monitoring and patching
Good providers watch servers, computers and network devices continuously and apply updates on a schedule. Ask how patches are tested, how failures are handled and what reporting you receive.
3. Security planned in, not bolted on
Look for endpoint protection, multi-factor authentication, email security and staff security awareness training. Ask who watches the alerts, because tools only help if someone acts on them.
4. Backup and recovery you can prove
Ask how often backups run, where copies are stored, whether one copy is protected from deletion, and how often restores are tested. A backup that has never been restored is only a hope.
5. Planning and budgeting
A strong provider helps you plan hardware refreshes, licensing and projects so costs are predictable. Ask for a technology roadmap and regular business reviews.
6. Clear pricing and exit terms
Ask what is included, what costs extra, and what happens if you leave. You should own your documentation and passwords, and the provider should help with a smooth hand-off.
Questions to ask any provider
- What is included in the monthly price, and what is not?
- Who answers the phone, and how are urgent issues handled after hours?
- How do you secure our accounts and devices?
- How do you test backups?
- Can we speak to a current client?
At CTEKS we start with a free assessment so you can see the state of your network, backups and security before you decide. Request a free assessment.
