Network Performance Problems and Security Risks

- Slow networks can signal outdated gear or security problems.
- Monitor, document and segment your network.
- Replace unsupported equipment.
A slow or unreliable network is more than an annoyance. Sometimes it is a warning sign. Here are common problems, what usually causes them and why they can matter for security.
Slow Wi-Fi
Causes include too few access points, poor placement, interference and old equipment. Unmanaged or consumer-grade gear is also hard to secure and update.
Intermittent drops
Failing cables, switches or power can cause these. They can also come from overloaded or misconfigured devices, or from unusual traffic that needs investigating.
Slow internet at busy times
Bandwidth may be undersized, or a device may be using far more than it should, such as a backup job gone wrong or malware sending data out.
Old firewalls
An aging firewall can slow everything down and may no longer receive security updates.
Everything on one flat network
When printers, guests and servers share a network, congestion and risk both rise. Segmentation improves performance and limits the damage of an incident.
Good habits
- Monitor devices and links so you see problems before users do.
- Keep firmware current and replace end-of-life gear.
- Document the network and review it yearly.
- Separate guest, staff and server traffic.
How CTEKS helps
We monitor networks, find the cause of slowdowns and plan upgrades before failures happen.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my firewall is outdated?
Check whether it still receives security updates and whether it handles your current internet speed. Your IT provider can confirm.
Why does Wi-Fi get slow in some rooms?
Common causes are coverage gaps, interference and too many devices on too few access points.
What is network segmentation?
It means splitting a network into separate zones, such as staff, guests and servers, so a problem in one does not spread to all.
